When God Speaks to Me

Below is an excerpt from the start of my journal titled “When God Speaks to Me”. It is a collection of my musings, writings, recollections, and recounts of the times I hear from God. I am finding the more I read His Word, the more He opens up to me the path He has for me.

God still speaks to us. We just need to tune in to hear Him. The closer we get to Him and His word the easier it becomes to hear what He is trying to tell us. So often, especially early on in trying to hear from God, He would speak to me through images, words, and signs that would repeat. Some might call these times “coincidences”,however the author Squire Rushnell penned them as “God Winks”. These “Winks”are how God starting getting my attention. A way to communicate and to reassure that I was on the right path; His path for me. I started to write these “winks” in a journal so that I could, one day, look back at the patterns and hold fast to the messages.

The more I got into study the Bible and reading the word, the easier it started to become to recognize how God was speaking to me. Even more as I truly began to obey His word, listen to the Holy Spirit, and follow His path for meI began to hear Him more clearly.

This journal is musings of the times God has spoken to me and what He has said. I’ll throw in some “winks” and stories here and there too. One of my past favorites that comes to mind is when I overwhelmingly felt drawn to read the Book of Ruth and I, of course, ignored it the first time so He put in my heart a second time. This time I obeyed and read the Book of Ruth…a few times. The next time He put it on my heart to read a book I obeyed the first time. Lesson learned.

More recently, on September 27th, I was driving home thinking about all the positive responses to night one of the women’s group I facilitate. I reminded myself that it was not me, but the Holy Spirit that took over that night. I had to leave my “self” at the door and let the Holy Spirit lead. All this reminded me of the conversation I had had with my mom just a week or so earlier about how I pictured my “Spirit Man” almost leprechaun like in how He gets excited and jumps for joy at times. I was at a stop waiting to turn right when I took the turn a camper van passed me with the word “leprechaun” above the windshield. I burst out laughing, but was also reassured of my thoughts that the night as indeed Spirit lead.

Just a few days ago in a 24 hour period the same verse was revealed to me three times! (2 Timothy 3:16-17). On top of that I went into Books a Million (Spirit led) within that same 36 hour time frame. I wasn’t sure why I was led to go, but figured I was there so why not look for books for school(I’m in school for a ministry degree). There was nine books on the list and I only found one,”Smith Wigglesworth on Spiritual Gifts”. The scripture on the cover was from 2 Timothy! “Stir up the gift of God which is in you” 2 Timothy 1:6 NKJV

So where do I go from here? How do I begin? Today seems like a good enough day as any to start documenting the times God speaks to me so here goes….

As I was leaving the church parking lot walking across the grass that separates the parking lot from the road, I saw a green paper bracelet from the women’s conference Friday night (10/4). I heard “pick it”. At first I walked a few paces. Seeing more trash on the ground I thought “what about the rest of this? Do you want me to get that too?” I plainly heard “No”. I picked up the bracelet and got “be obedient in even the small things”.

To me this was just like my mom and her “walks with God”. He was testing me as well as reminding the importance of obedience in even the smallest of things He asks of us.

It is 6am and I am at my desk with my coffee settling in to read Day 3 of Week 3 in Rooted study devotional. As I open my book, I look on my desk and notice the scripture verse card on my desk is slanted so I stop to put it back in place.

After putting the card in place, I look down to start reading and the same verse starts off the page. I’d call that a “God Wink”
