Sabbath morning musings

These are my musings as I sat enjoying the quiet of my sabbath morning this past weekend. I sat with my Bible and my coffee gazing out the window. Suddenly and subtly the beauty around me opened my eyes and my heart to see wonder in the common everyday view outside the window.

Do you ever just stop and appreciate the moment in time that you are in? Breathe in the subtle beauty that is around you. See the leaves being gently pushed by the breeze. The stream bubbling and flowing, making patterns in the water as it collides against rock and ground. The colors of the season as they turn from greens to reds and oranges; all of them coming together in a kaleidoscope of brilliance.

God has created such a masterpiece; intricately weaving it all together. Yet, how often do we stop and truly soak it in? To feel it deep in our core. To appreciate the endless beauty right before us.

We make cliche acknowledgments and little “ohs” and “ahs” without actually breathing it deep into our soul. We take it (the beauty around us) for granted and move on with our ever busy lives.

Here I find myself looking at the base of a tree. The way the roots come together to form the base, the stalk, the tree itself. The intricacies of the bark as it forms patterns almost too difficult to put into words.  I find myself fascinated by the formation as it appears like three or four trees coming from the base or root….a family.

Oh how now I am drawn to the sound of the wind and how it moves through the trees. Gentle at first then stronger creating an array of sounds as the leaves and branches move against each other. There is much sound in silence if we stop and listen. Just as there is much sound in the wind if we open our ears to it.

From the sound of the wind my eyes are drawn to a single flower holding on to its presence. Some leaves may have fallen, but the flow holds its ground even as the winds come and the temperature drops. It seems we, too, do this at times- Hold on even as our time to go or time to change nears. Or maybe it’s the beauty in standing strong in who we are despite the world around us changing. Whatever it may be, tis a beauty to see.

Hope. What I see all around me is hope. I cannot so much say why. I simply know hope is the word that floods my mind. There is beauty and there is hope all around us. If only we stop and see it. Stop and truly take it into our very soul.

I pray today that you take a moment, just a moment, to breathe in God’s creation around you. Recognize the subtle beauty . Marvel in, seemingly, insignificant details. Put on the eyes of a child experiencing the world for the first time. You may just be surprised as your soul finds rest as you ponder, even for this moment, God’s infinite intricacies.

“For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you.”
